Beautiful, Strange Portraits Of Women From Behind And Their Hair – Charlotte Hopkins

Charlotte Hopkins Hall is a British artist who is painting beautiful portraits of women from behind and their hair. ‘Painting a form of psychological drama, the premise of the work draws from our idiosyncratic relationships to reality, and in conjunction with the titles given to the paintings, the figure becomes a conflicted proposition. Turning their back on the viewer, these figures occupying the white spaces test the line between abstraction and figuration, and in a frozen deliberation find themselves emulating a certain absurdity. Through the repeated subject or brush stroke, the image is exhausted and a rhythm is initiated. When painting multi-paneled paintings, the breaks between the panels act as pause and the rhythm is reinforced. The surrounding whiteness opens possible narratives adding an unquantifiable dimension to the curious, conceptual space of these finely executed paintings.’ – Charlotte Hopkins Hall
