Children On The Edge: Hikari Shimoda New Exhibition At Corey Helford Gallery

Hikari Shimoda’s new solo exhibition, titled ‘Children on the Edge’, is currently hosted at Corey Helford Gallery, Los Angeles (Jan. 13 – Feb. 17, 2018) – The starry-eyed, magical girls and boys at the center of Shimoda’s paintings have become synonymous with her work. Poised as spiritual deities or the extraordinary superheroes of popular culture, they represent hope of salvation for a dying modern world – a netherworld bursting with problems as humanity struggles to cope with its imminent demise. With her fourth major solo exhibition, ‘Children on the Edge’, Shimoda both humanizes and expands on the mythology of her young characters in a series of seventeen new paintings. The series portrays ambiguous children ‘on the edge’, which she describes as having many meanings: the edge between childhood and adulthood, the edge between two worlds (the spirit world and our reality), or the border between the artist’s home country and other countries.
