Axel Siguroarson Spectacular Pictures Of The Largest Volcanic Eruption In Iceland Since 1783

These incredible, apocalyptic-looking photos, taken by Axel Sigurðarson, show the scenes that occurred during the eruptions in Iceland between August 29, 2014 and February 27, 2015. Born and raised in Reykjavík, Sigurðarson is a keen explorer of the beautiful Icelandic Highlands. Whilst checking out Holuhraun, he managed to catch the eruption of Bárðarbunga. In his aerial shots, we get a great view of the extent of the events with the wide range of red hot molten rock seeping across the mountain scape. Some images show huge blasts of lava as well as large clouds of dust and gas. One breathtaking shot even shows an airplane flying dangerously close as lava is thrown into the air nearby. As well as taking shots from a plane, Sigurðarson was also snapping on the ground, documenting the scientists he met whilst at the scene. These included renowned seismologist Ragnar ‘Skjálfti’ Stefánsson, who was there to conduct research at the site. This was the largest volcanic eruption in Iceland since 1783, which lasted from August 29, 2014 to February 27, 2015.
