Troy Brooks Surreal, Glamorous Portraits Of Women With Elongated Anatomies

Toronto-based artist Troy Brooks paints glamorous women who don’t smile. In fact, the Women of Troy generally maintain cold, stoic faces despite the idea that the artist captures them in transformative moments. Brooks, who suffered greatly as a gay youth growing up in Canada, channels anger and escapism ever so subtly in characters inspired by Hollywood’s golden age, namely female leads who stood up to their male counterparts in less egalitarian times.
Troy Brooks: ‘I am a contemporary surrealist painter from Toronto. In a nutshell, my work focuses on an extensive collective of female characters observed in allegorical settings. I’ve had no formal training. You could say I sort of worked briefly in illustration before I started exhibiting my paintings in 2010. Since then my girls have been shown on three continents’.
HI-Fructose Magazine: ‘She is posed in weird environments of soft colors that match her pale white skin. Her abnormally stretched limbs are almost torturous-looking and unsettling, complimenting Brook’s bizarre themes’.
Corey Helford Gallery: ‘You cannot miss a Troy Brooks painting. His surreal portraits of women with elongated anatomies have become signature icons of the new contemporary art scene. Clearly influenced by the dramatic glamour of the femme fatales of 30’s and 40’s film noir, Brooks’ women stare down the viewer as if taking their measure from within the world behind the frame. They are aloof, yet burning with interior dialogue and seductively demanding the attention of anyone who catches their gaze’.
Troy Brooks’ stunning solo exhibition dedicated to his late mother ‘Shinigami’ will Open on August 8th, 2017 at Red Head Gallery in Toronto, Canada.
