Back In The USSR – Architecture Of Waiting Series By Peter Ortner

‘The often very extravagant design of these bus stops, however, is not commonplace and is therefore remarkable. The unorthodox construction leads to a shift in expectation and reality. While we often associate socialist architecture with gray, prefabricated buildings, looking at these forgotten relics evokes a different, perhaps new perspective. It is about taking a closer look at architectural history and overcoming established stereotypes. Based on this genre of architecture, it is evident that an uninhibited and open form language was by all means possible in the east. In contrast to this, uniform and standardized waiting zones were set up in the countries oriented towards the west. Colorful advertising often masks the arbitrariness of the urban furniture that can be ordered from catalogs. An eclectic micro architecture emerged in the east by the roadside. Constructivism, historicism, and subtle Bauhaus citations are interwoven as a collage that is repeatedly interrupted by archaic insertions’.

‘At first I only perceived the bus stops as singular phenomena, but I soon came to recognize that the potential of these buildings could only unfold through juxtaposition and comparison. This enables one to observe different rates of decline and corrosion. Differences and similarities can be identified and described. It is a kind of long-term experiment, leading to unique entities through neglect and climatic influences. Transported into an imaginary museum, these readymades would form a collection of dialectic constructs. They would be pure object art if they were detached from their original context. The exhibits refer to the past and at the same time incorporate a new spirit of the times. What emerges is an eternal cycle, an aesthetic of disappearance’.
